Synopsis

This course examines the creation, development and functioning of the American presidency, paying particular attention to several of its key occupants. Focus is upon institutional development and political theory, as well as the legal foundations of presidential power. And it examines the specific factors that make presidents more or less resourceful. The course also covers the presidential election system and its development. Although a diverse set of disciplinary approaches are provided, the prevailing concern is with the presidency as an institution in American government.
